How to Create Productive Spaces for Study, Life and Play

Inspiration on how to make the most of your indoor spaces.

There’s no getting around it – we’re all spending a lot of time at home these days. Social isolation means our homes are not only the place for relaxing, but also the place where we must be productive in all aspects of our life. As students, there is the added challenge that often our homes are shared with others, or are only temporary places we are staying. So how can you create positive, productive spaces that inspire you to #liveyourbestisolife?
1. Create Zones
When we’re spending all our time in one place, it is too easy to fall into habits like studying in bed. But when we don’t have defined spaces for tasks, it is more likely you will become distracted. Even if you are living in a student apartment or a homestay, and you only have one room to do all your living, you can create dedicated spaces. Set up a desk with your laptop or tablet, workbooks and stationary and commit to using this zone for your study. Then, create another space – perhaps with a comfy armchair and a coffee table – for your break zone where you can chat with your friends online or watch vids on YouTube. If you’re looking for some cheap furniture, don’t forget to check out Facebook marketplace or Gumtree for some great, second-hand bargains!

2. Reduce Clutter
Nothing makes it more challenging to concentrate than being surrounded by mess. Do your best to keep your work and play spaces tidy, and this will make you want to spend more time in them! A handy tip is to use baskets or boxes to tidy away loose items. This will also make it easier to find later when you’re looking for that elusive pencil sharpener.
3. Personalise your Space
Tidy doesn’t have to mean boring though! Remember that to be productive, your spaces should reflect your personality and inspire you. Pin some of your favourite artwork to the walls, or pictures of your family and friends. Small touches such as cushions or rugs don’t have to cost the earth but can make a big difference. Have fun with your space!
4. Let in some Light
If possible, position your desk near a window for maximum natural light and airflow. Fresh air and sunlight not only improve cognitive function but also help you to sleep better at night. If you are in a room with very little natural light, invest in a funky lamp which can “brighten” up your space.

5. Add Green
Finally, add an indoor plant to your space. Research has found that adding plants to a workspace increases productivity and helps reduce stress. Indoor plants add life and help filter the air, benefiting us night and day. Try plants such as Devil’s Ivy, Peace Lily or any kind of succulent as a great place to start. Add a watering reminder to your calendar if you think you might forget and enjoy the sense of accomplishment as you watch your new friend thrive!
